Zabrze

Zabrze is one of 14 big towns in Uppersilesian Industrial Region. Located in Silesian Province, Poland, it has about 200,000 people. A settlement called Zabrze began to exist in the early 14th century. Since the end of the 18th century Zabrze has been a center of heavy industry, especially mining. Rapid development came in the late 19th century. Since that time Zabrze has been one of the biggest towns in Silesian region. Apart from industry, there are also a lot of cultural places here like a theatre (Teatr Nowy), music - and - dance hall (Dom Muzyki I Tanca), cinema - leisure - complex (Multikino), Philharmonic, Coal Museum, Sports Hause etc.

Upper Silesian Industrial Region covers more than 2, 7 thousand square kilometres and has about 3 mln. people. It is the biggest urban-industrial region in Poland, consisting of 14 big towns like Katowice, Gliwice, Zabrze, Bytom, Sosnowiec. Chief branches of industry are: mining, metallurgy, power, machine building, electronics.
